Why Am I Not Improving at Climbing?

You train the way you always have, you show up to the same sessions, and the grades stop moving. It's one of the most demoralizing places to be as a climber. But a plateau isn't a sign you've reached your limit. It's a sign that what got you here won't get you there.

A plateau is information

When progress stalls, the instinct is to train harder — more sessions, more volume, more time on the wall. Often that deepens the rut, because the problem usually isn't effort. It's that your training has stopped matching where you actually are. A plateau is telling you something specific has changed, and the work is figuring out what.

Find the real limiter

Most climbers know their plateau by its symptom but not its cause. Pull it apart:

  • Strength — are you falling because you can't hold the positions?

  • Technique — are you falling because your movement is inefficient and wasting energy?

  • Tactics — are you reading the climb wrong, resting in the wrong place, or burning out before the crux?

  • Recovery — are you simply tired? Chronic fatigue and a plateau look identical from the inside.

You can't meaningfully train all of these at once. The point of finding the limiter is to stop spreading effort evenly and start aiming it.

You can't always see your own climbing

Part of why plateaus persist is that the limiter obvious from outside is invisible from inside the movement. You feel the move but don't see the dropped heel or the early reach. An outside eye — through video review and a coach watching your sessions over time — turns a vague "that felt bad" into a specific thing to fix.
